FODMAP’s Anyone?

Sounds like a term used for your GPS right? Well, it kinda is, for the GPS of your digestive system.

FODMAP is an acronym referring to Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols. These are complex names for a collection of molecules found in food that can be poorly absorbed by some people. I am one of those people.

I’ll spare you the gory details of the past 10 months of hell I’ve been through in trying to figure out what was wrong with me. I seriously thought I had stomach cancer, until I learned that cancer is usually not painful. My stomach felt like someone had a fork in my intestines, twisting them in one direction for hours on end. After those pains subsided, it felt like I had been punched in the stomach a few rounds by Holyfield.

I saw doctor after doctor who simply dismissed me with a case of IBS! If any of you reading this has any kind of tummy issues, I’m sure you’ve heard the term before. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common gut disorder, and the cause is still unknown. I feel like some doctors use this diagnosis very loosely and far too often.

I was finally diagnosed with SIBO, Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. I am very proud to say I was my own health advocate, and a persistent one as well, and I weeded my way through, I found good specialists and a fantastic registered dietitian who genuinely cares. I am on my way to getting my health back and I can not put into words how blessed and grateful I feel about it. I will write more, in detail, for those of you who may be suffering like I was, but for now I wanted to get this information out to you.

If you think you may be suffering from SIBO, here is the name of my Registered Dietitian and a link to her site. Kate Scarlata. She is fantastic.

Here’s to healthy guts…..happy eating and finding people who care
